           Alison Mills Newman

  Author, Actress, Producer, Screenwriter










Alison Mills Newman was born on Long Island, New York, to Theodore Mills, a research scientist, and Margaret Mills, a Ph. D in Education. She was raised in Los Angeles, where she began acting professionally at the age of twelve, with guest starring roles on the television shows, “Mr. Novak” and the “John Forsythe Show.” In addition to guest starring on many TV shows including, “The Love Boat,” “Room 222,” and “ Rap Up,” She became an original cast member of the historic television series, “Julia,” which starred Diahann Carroll, playing the babysitter Carol Derring, and was also in the original cast member of, “The Leslie Uggams Show,” playing Leslie’s hip little sister Oletha, on a segment titled “Sugarhill.”

Under the direction of Frank Silvera and alongside Maya Angelou and Beah Richards, she studied four years at the American Theatre of Being and has appeared on Broadway’s “Three Penny Opera.” In addition to her natural talent for acting, Alison also is musically gifted and at the age twenty-two sang with Jazz legend Ornette Coleman, Taj Mahal, Don Cherry, Weather Report and signed a major recording deal with A&M Records.


Alison published her first novel, “Francisco” (Reed, Cannon & Johnson, 1974) and published her second novel, “Maggie 3,” She is the executive producer, co-screen writer, and co-star of the award winning independent film, “Virgin Again,” which was written and directed by Francisco Newman, her late husband. “Virgin Again,” has been featured at the Cannes Film Festival, Pan African Film Festival, and Philadelphia International Film Festival. It has also been shown on the Black Family Channel in Atlanta, Georgia and has acquired international distribution. Alison has also written and directed several original plays.

A graduate of St. Stephens University, with a B.A in Theology, Alison now resides in Atlanta Georgia, where she has lectured at the Black Women’s Wellness Center, Spellman College and enjoys teaching acting.
